Name: John Miller
Title: Category Manager
Company: Valvoline
Certification Obtained: CPSA

Q: How long have you or your company been involved with the CMA?

A: I have been with the CMA since the summer of 2018, Valvoline for many more years before that.  I attended my first CMA/SIMA Conference 2020 in Dallas.

Q: Why did you decide to become certified to begin with?

A: I planned to work in this field for many years and what better way to bring knowledge and validity to my career than to have a known and reputable certification from CMA.  When I first started, the CPSA certification seemed a long way off.  All others on our category management team had already earned their CPSA and they kept me focused to aspire to that level.

Q: What was the most interesting thing you learned as you completed the training and certification?

A: When preparing the essay answers, it really brought to light all of the different skills, software and areas of the business that all of the prior training courses touched on.  It brought full circle the lessons and quizzes taken for the CPCA and CPCM levels.

Q: How do you feel you will use this certification in your current role?

A: I will use this certification to bring better insights and collaboration with my accounts.  The CPSA exam is the culmination of years of working and applying real life scenarios to overcome obstacles and help our customers grow their business.

Q: What advice would you give someone considering completing the training and certification?

A: It is a great time investment, and it will be worth it in the long run.  Stick with the continuing education offered as it keeps you up to date on how the world of category management is evolving.
