Name: Skyler Grant
Title: Product Merchandising Analyst II
Company: Discount Tire
Certification Obtained: CPCM

How long have you or your company been involved with the CMA?

I’ve been involved with CMA for as long as I have been with Discount Tire, one-and-a-half years. Earlier this year, the group of certified employees at Discount Tire were able to attend the CMA-SIMA Conference held in Las Vegas.

Why did you decide to become certified?

I believe in always learning and growing yourself personally and professionally, and I’m grateful to work for a company that shares the same beliefs. Discount Tire offers opportunities to become certified as a CPCM and I wanted to take advantage.

What was the most interesting thing you learned as you completed the training and certification?

Honestly, one of the most fascinating parts of my training was studying the in-depth planning and execution process of category management. You have to make sure you have a plan and execute it step by step to succeed. Having the ability to observe all the behind-the-scenes components of how to best display and provide product to each customer is truly helpful.

How do you feel you will use this certification in your current role?

In my current role as a Product Merchandising Analyst, I utilize my CPCM training to inform regional market evaluations, making sure I’m providing the correct type of tires to the end users of the product. As the market and buying decisions change from a customer’s perspective, these trainings help determine whether we as a company are providing the appropriate tires for specific local consumers based on market trends.

What advice would you give someone considering completing the training and certification?

You should definitely go through the training. No matter what type of industry you’re in, these courses and certifications are applicable to everyone involved with product merchandising and can really help you understand best practices when managing.
